When We Bloom

We collaborated on the graphic system with Frevo for their new exhibition, “When We Bloom”, by the artist David “Mr.StarCity” White, curated by Destinee Ross-Sutton.

The design features a custom-drawn hand and flower motif, along with a carefully selected color palette, all inspired by the vibrant floral themes found in the artworks. The type treatment takes cues from the When We Bloom poem, bringing the exhibition’s spirit to life across various applications.

The design system extends across exhibition graphics, an art catalog, flyers, menu design, social media, and more, creating a cohesive visual experience.

Exploring the beauty of life and the concept of recognizing one another through the act of giving flowers

Frevo presents When We Bloom, a new solo exhibition by Brooklyn-born artist David “Mr.StarCity” White, in collaboration with the groundbreaking curator Destinee Ross-Sutton.

Exploring the beauty of life and the concept of recognizing one another through the act of giving flowers—both literally and metaphorically—as expressions of love, When We Bloom is the curator’s fourth exhibition with Mr. StarCity and her second collaboration with Frevo after “Saving Room 4 More” a sold-out show featuring a solo exhibition of then rising-start artist Khari Turner.

Working between New York City and Los Angeles, Mr. StarCity is recognized for his experimental storytelling conveyed through figurative painting and poetry. When We Bloom is a vibrant exploration of resilience and renewal told through a new series of textured, expressionistic portraits, BLOOMERS.

The singular figures project a sense of heaviness; their blank expressions emerge through rough surfaces of dark, layered color, suggesting the emotional scars of struggle and adversity. Surrounded by flourishing flower beds, the figures starkly contrast their vibrant, hopeful environments. Beneath the scratched textures of the portraits lie colorful, amoeba-like forms, hinting at the unseen depths of those affected by trauma and systemic stigmas. This layered approach reflects the duality of the human experience: pain interwoven with hope, vulnerability balanced with strength.

“This new body of work celebrates life’s beauty while acknowledging the complexities of mental health and the emotional scars we carry,” says Ross-Sutton. “At its core, the series serves as a gentle yet powerful reminder to appreciate one another and give ‘flowers’—literal or metaphorical—freely, as acts of unconditional love and acknowledgment.”

Also on view are select works from Mr. StarCity’s LOVERBOY series. These mixed-media portraits recount the story of a traveling jazz musician and hopeless romantic who is habitually falling in love and heartbroken, both cursed and comforted by his one true love – his saxophone.
